”Chagu-Chagu Umako” folk crafts of the Morioka region in Iwate Prefecture.
Horses played an important role in farming and transportation for farmers in Iwate Prefecture. Horses were valued not only as labor power but also as members of the family.
To thank the horses and pray for their health and safety, the “Chagu Chagu Umako” event was started every June. In this event, gorgeously decorated horses walk about 15km to Komagata Shrine in Takizawa City. This craft is a representation of the event.
The name “chagu-chagu” comes from the sound of bells attached to the horse decorations, which sound like “chagu-chagu. The sound of this bell is believed to drive away evil spirits and bring good luck, and when echoed during the procession, it is believed to bring peace and prosperity to the entire community. Chagu Chagu Umako is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of Japan and is still carefully preserved by the local people.

岩手県の農家では農業や運搬のために馬が重要な役割を果たしていました。馬は労働力としてだけでなく、家族の一員として大切にされてきました。馬に感謝し、その健康と安全を祈るために、毎年6月に「ちゃぐちゃぐ馬子」の行事が始まりました。この行事では、華やかに飾られた馬達が、滝沢市の駒形神社までの約15キロの道のりを歩き、多くの方がその姿を見に来ます。この工芸はその様子を表現したものです。様々な色があり、あざやかでかわいらしい姿です。
「ちゃぐちゃぐ」という名前は、馬の装飾に付けられた鈴の音が「ちゃぐちゃぐ」と聞こえることから来ています。この鈴の音は、悪霊を追い払い、幸運を呼び込むと信じられており、行列の際に響き渡ることで、地域全体に平和と繁栄をもたらすとされています。
ちゃぐちゃぐ馬子は、日本の重要無形民俗文化財に指定され、現在でも地域の人々によって大切に守り続けられています。素敵な行事ですね。雪解けした6月の岩手にぜひ見に行ってみたいです。
