Bear Safety Practices in Iwate
ここ数年はクマの出没のニュースが多いですね。”対策をしてください” ”気を付けてください” といわれても人間がコントロールできるものではないですから、できる限りのことをするしかないですね。頻繁にニュースになる東北地方の方は常々ご苦労されていると思います。先日東北に行ったときに地元の方の対策が垣間見れるタイミングがあったので書きたいと思います。
During my recent trip to the Tohoku region, I had a chance to observe how local residents prepare for bear encounters. It was a rare and insightful moment that made me want to share what I learned.
熊鈴は必需品 Bear Bells
ホームセンターに行ったときに品切れが目立ったので、店員さんに聞いてみたところ、どの家も複数個の熊鈴を持っているそうです。徒歩や歩き自転車で登下校する子供は必ず持たせてるそうで、遊びに行くときも山側へ行くときはつけさせているとのことでした。
とにかく大きな音 Loud and Far-Reaching Sound
とにかく広範囲に聞こえるように工夫しているとのこと。風や葉のかすれる音で、鈴やベルの音が消えてしまっては意味がないです。商品の中には乾電池で動くブザーなんかもありますね。
Locals make sure the bells can be heard over a wide area. If the sound gets drowned out by wind or rustling leaves, it defeats the purpose. Some products even include battery-powered buzzers to ensure the sound carries.
複数の音色 Multiple Tones
周囲の自然音もありますし、聞こえやすい音、聞こえにくい音がやはりクマにもあるとのことです。音色の違う2つ以上の鈴やベルを同時に鳴らすのが効果的だそうです。商品も2つのベル、鈴がついた商品もありました。
Because of the surrounding natural sounds, bears—like humans—can hear some tones better than others. It’s said that using two or more bells with different tones simultaneously is more effective. Some products are designed with multiple bells for this reason.
熊は天気が良く、暑い日は苦手 Bears Avoid Hot, Sunny Days
クマは見ての通り、黒い毛皮を身に着けてます。日差しに当たったり、暑い時間帯は苦手だそうです。油断してはいけませんが、気温の高い日、日差しの強い日は活動が弱まるせいか、出没しづらいそうです。
As you can see, bears wear black fur. They’re not fond of direct sunlight or hot weather. While you should never let your guard down, it seems that on hot, sunny days, bear activity tends to decrease, making encounters less likely.
いざとなったら唐辛子の粉 Chili Powder
クマスプレーは唐辛子の成分でできていますが、スプレーではなく、リアル唐辛子の粉末を携帯している方もいるとか。効き目は風頼みだそうです（(笑)）投げる側が風上にいればきれいに飛んでいくが、風下だと自分にかかる可能性もあるとのことで【賭け】と言ってました。
Bear spray is made from chili extract, but some locals carry actual powdered chili instead. Its effectiveness depends on the wind—if you’re upwind, it flies nicely toward the bear; if you’re downwind, you risk getting hit yourself. One person jokingly called it a “gamble.”
車でも油断しない Don’t Let Your Guard Down in the Car
特に夜の帰宅時はクマが近くにいても気づけないため、車庫入れの前に追い払う意味でクラクションを鳴らすそうです。家の中にいる方も帰宅に気づけるので一石二鳥とのこと。
Especially when returning home at night, people may not notice a bear nearby. That’s why some locals honk their car horn before pulling into the garage—to scare off any bears. It also alerts family members inside the house that someone’s arrived, so it serves a double purpose.
まとめ Summary
筆者の携帯している熊鈴はこちら。モンベルのベル小と大＋熊野神社の鈴の計3つです。1つはショルダーベルトにつけるので、緊急時の笛も合わせて。ただあくまでも予防の1つで”鈴を持っているから絶対安全ではありません！” 情報収集と対策ともに万全にして夏山を楽しみましょう。
I carry three sound bear bells: a small and large bell from Montbell, plus one from Kumano Shrine. One of them is attached to my shoulder strap, along with an emergency whistle. But of course, this is just one preventive measure—carrying a bell doesn’t guarantee complete safety! Let’s make sure we gather the right information and take proper precautions so we can enjoy hiking in the summer mountains with peace of mind.
