“Kinten Daruma” Folk crafts of the Dogo onsen area in Ehime Prefecture.
I stopped by Imaharuya to look for folk art in Dogo Onsen. A small red Daruma doll caught my eye, so I asked the shopkeeper about it and was told that it was the prototype for the Hime-Daruma doll, which is now produced in small quantities and hard to find. I was attracted by the unique shape, and the more I looked at it, the more I loved it, so I bought it!
The name of this folk art is Kinten Daruma. This is a type of traditional papier-mâché craft produced in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture. This small daruma is called “Kinten Daruma” because gold leaf is applied to the flat top of its head.
Kinten Daruma is cherished as a good luck charm for academic achievement and financial success, and is often displayed on household altars. The body is decorated with white patterns representing the sun and green patterns representing pine wood needles. It has a weight in the base so that it can stand up again if knocked over, similar to a “tumbler doll.”
The Ryomura family has been making Kinten Daruma for over 150 years, using molds passed down from the first generation, and each piece is meticulously molded and painted. Since each piece is finished by hand, there are individual differences in shape and painting.

道後温泉のお土産に民芸を探しに立ち寄った今治屋さん。赤く小さなだるまさんが目に入ったので、店員さんに聞いてみると、姫だるまの原型となっただるまで、今は生産量が少なくなかなか手に入らないとか。独特な形に惹かれ、見れば見るほど愛らしく、購入しました。
金天だるまは、愛媛県松山市で制作される伝統的な張子細工の一種で、平らな頭のてっぺんに金紙が貼られていることから「金天だるま」と呼ばれています。
金天だるまは、学業成就や金運を呼ぶ縁起物として親しまれており、神棚などに飾られることが多いです。胴の模様は白で太陽を、緑で松葉を表しており、底にはおもりが入っていて倒れても起き上がるようになっています。これは「起き上がり小法師」のような役割を果たします。
五代目両村家が150年以上にわたって制作しており、初代から伝わる型を用いて、成型から絵付けまで丁寧に行っています。一つ一つ手作業で仕上げられるため、みんな表情がちょっとずつ違います。
