The pigeon whistles （Japanese name: Hatobue） a traditional craft of Aomori Prefecture, are particularly made from Shimokawara ware pottery in Hirosaki City. The pigeon whistles have a simple yet elegant appearance, characterized by a rustic and warm texture, with vibrant colors on a white base. When blown, they produce a gentle “ho” sound, which has made them popular.
Shimokawara ware started in the latter half of the Edo period and continues to be made in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture. In addition to pigeon whistles, various other earthenware figurines, including zodiac animal figurines, are crafted. Their simple shapes and serene expressions are incredibly charming.

青森県の伝統工芸品である鳩笛は、特に弘前市の下川原焼という陶器で作られています。鳩笛は、素朴で温かみのある手触りと、白地に鮮やかな彩色を施し、シンプルなたたずまいですが華やかさがあります。吹くと「ホー」という優しい音色が響くことから人気があります。
下川原焼は江戸時代後半に始まり、現在も青森県弘前市で作られています。鳩笛の他にも、干支人形やさまざまな土人形が作られており、その素朴な形と穏やかな表情が何とも言えずかわいらしいです。カラフルさから西洋の民芸にも見えますね。
